The line ‘Don’t worry, be happy’ is spoken around the world now, momentarily lifting thousands of mental loads every day. Before Bobby McFerrin’s 1988 hit took those words mainstream, they originated from the philosophy of the Indian spiritual guru Meher Baba. 
 
Meher Baba started his transformation at nineteen, and spent forty-four years in silence, growing into the beloved smiling guru he came to be known as in the later years.
 
Meher Baba’s philosophy deemed the world an illusion and saw all beings as ways that the unconscious divine seeks to grow conscious through experience. He said that “things that are real are given and received in silence,” often preferring to communicate only with smiles and gestures. The four decades that Meher Baba spent observing silence refined his speech so much that it became simple and essential. It influenced his way of sharing profound ideas with striking ease and made his teachings instantly perceptible to many. His most famous line, ‘Don’t worry, be happy’, is probably the best example of just how effective Meher Baba’s simplicity was in making his ideas not only palpable but also appreciable around the world.
