What makes the Magician

In his book "Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious," Jung wrote: "The figure of the magician expresses the desire to know and control the mysterious forces that lie hidden in the recesses of the unconscious. The magician is a symbol of transformation and mastery over the hidden aspects of oneself and the world.”


The magician archetype is associated with a set of key personality traits and characteristics. It's important to note that these traits can manifest differently in each entity—whether an individual or a brand—as archetypes are universal patterns that can be expressed uniquely.

Magician archetypes are typically characterized by a thirst for understanding the mysteries of the world and possessing insights into hidden truths and esoteric knowledge. Magicians rely on their deep intuition and inner guidance. This archetype has a knack for perceiving hidden connections, patterns, and possibilities that others may overlook. Their insights can be instrumental in problem-solving and decision-making. Magicians are skilled at traversing boundaries and navigating different realms. They may bridge the gap between the conscious and unconscious, the material and spiritual, or the visible and invisible worlds. Because the Magician archetype has a strong association with change, both within themselves and in the world around them, it is particularly useful in representing transformative entities. This is why they lend well to brands in the businesses of consultancy, strategy, forecasting, technology, health and wellness, personal coaching, design, creativity and even education. Like all archetypes, the Magician archetype also has a shadow side, representing the negative aspects that can come about when the archetype's strengths are misused. Yesterday echoes in me; traces of its faces and voices sweep in through my seaside window, retelling stories and laughing. Like a song, they lift me to heights of rapture at times and cease altogether at another moment, dropping me back to Earth, only to begin again. I had been let into a secret world on this island so far from my home.


It was when I visited a house named Alborada in Colombo—my first social gathering since moving to Ceylon eight weeks ago. Taking a liking to my writing, Alborada’s owner had invited me to an evening of drinks. Upon entering, I was transported by a goddess statue framed between the leaves and roots of a philodendron creeper climbing the walls of Alborada. Her ethereal form—atop a lotus, holding an instrument of music—shone through the earthliness of the red clay that it was crafted from. She emanated a beauty that I can only describe as sanctified—beyond the grasp of human desire. It bathed the world in a light of sacred delight. I walked from room to room, drinking cooled tea and arrack insisted upon me, drifting between the many paintings of seascapes and the wilderness that are as exuberant as they were sincere. I shifted dreamlike between photographs of beautifully sun-coloured men and women—their skin more akin to bronze than flesh—and meeting their real-life counterparts visiting Alborada that evening. Artistic savants, oriental misfits, musicians who pronounce your name like a song, writers, actors—all resting comfortably between east, west, classical, and neoteric. They befriended me with ease, opening new layers of the quiet, natural extravagance inherent to this place. I realized that, along Albarado’s leafy verandas and courtyards, I’ve encountered Colombo’s bohemia—a secret island within an island.


Back here at my house by the edge of the sea—where my only companions are Muthu the cook and Kalu the feline—the brief world at Alborada seems like a daydream. I long for my next invitation to revisit. But, in a sense, I remain part of that world with its allusions overwhelming me still. Outside my window is the miracle that is the sea. In the way the sea rebirths old rocks and sand trembling anew with its salty fluids, I remember the textures of a particularly beautiful painting at Alborada. The way the sea glimmered this morning—with fish throbbing in bright yellow, ultramarine, streaks of sanguine, and gleaming fertile greens like forests come alive—left coloured stains on my mind. The curves of the woman selling fruits blended gracefully with those of the mangoes, guavas and sapodillas in her basket; the rhythm of her walk and the rise and fall of her breasts were timed with the chorus of the ocean. Watching the fishermen—their browned muscles as taut as the ropes pulling their sails— I recalled the many nudes pinned up in the photography studio room of my host at Alborada. I can no longer help seeing a sense of natural innocence in everything that is sensual.


I think of the goddess at Alborada. Someone said she was Saraswatī—a divine symbol of life’s ever-persistent will to create beauty. I feel her again and again in the call to absorb sights, chroma, taste, and scents that flood my senses and in the revel of pouring it out through my pen.


I realize how much the encounters at Alborada had changed me. I no longer feel like an outsider on a faraway island; I’m no longer limited to a house by the sea and the work of the embassy. Instead, I find myself an unwitting devotee of Saraswatī who had chanced upon her playground. It makes me feel like a child and a king, all at once.


Although I’m alone, the colors of the fish, the taste of tea, and the memory of being made part of a secret world surround me. I allow myself to get lifted with the smell of frangipani, scatter in the rustle of palm leaves, and melt into the call of Saraswatī.

Kusum waited patiently for the bus conductor to punch the calculator for her balance; she had already done the mental math. She was used to calculating ahead of everyone in general. The painful hours waiting for the temple committee to figure out that her idea was, in fact, the most efficient… The years lived for her husband to finally comprehend her complex maneuvers to get ahead in life… These had made Kusum grow accustomed to waiting for others to catch up. After the conductor had moved to the next passenger, Kusum opened up her purse and peeked inside out of sheer nerves. Yes, the six-digit cheque was still there, safe.


Money had a strange dimension to it. It freed and weighed you at the same time.


Kusum felt the weight of this money particularly. She had taken it out of temple head monk Gunasāra’s drawer the day his unconscious body was rushed to the hospital. Being the chief donor’s wife, and the temple treasurer, Kusum had borrowed money from the head monk several times. He charged her a minimal interest and she returned the favour by overlooking many discrepancies in the temple accounts. That day too, Kusum had come to ask him for a loan to fund her daughter’s dream to start a hair salon in the city. But, in the calamity of the shaken-up temple rushing Gunasāra to the hospital, Kusum realised that she didn’t have to ask for the money. It was simply there, in Gunasāra's drawer—already stolen, as far as Kusum was concerned.


Throughout the week that followed, Kusum revisited her decision. Each time, she reminded herself how it was for a good reason. After finding her daughter Nimali on the bathroom floor—shaking and crying in hysterics holding chunks of cut-off hair—Kusum found a whole new part of herself awake. It was a part that awoke in every parent, when finding their child kicked in the gut by life, broken, and crownless. Kusum was ready to do anything to help Nimali live her dream—even if it meant finding amounts of money that she couldn’t acquire in the decades spent accounting.


Everything had a good reason. Life always evened out all checks and balances.


As the bus came to a halt, Kusum saw Nimali waiting for her. She asked Kusum a string of questions from what took her so long at the bank, to where they’re heading now. “I got you a place,” Kusum said, while crossing the street at the junction; She thrust her hand out at the careless motorcyclist who almost missed the red light. “A place? For wha...FOR MY SALON?’ Nimali asked, tripping on the sidewalk. Kusum smiled furtively and stopped in front of the crowded city mall. “Where???”, Nimali asked, wide eyes darting around in disbelief. Kusum pointed at the vacant storefront on the city mall’s ground floor. It faced one of the city’s busiest roads. She laughed out loud finding Nimali’s weight swung abruptly around her midriff, as the girl cried uncontrollably. “Come now..,” said Kusum. She tried to tuck what’s left of Nimali’s obliquely cut hair behind an ear, avoiding the stares of passersby. “How did you…?” Nimali asked, looking towards the large space. “Come, we must meet the building manager and put down the lease balance. Did you bring your ID?” asked Kusum, starting to climb up the mall stairs. “But, how?”, Nimali asked, wiping her face. “What are we accountants good for?,” Kusum asked without meeting her daughter’s eyes. “Saving up…?” Nimali asked, half frowning, half smiling.


The hardest part of weaving the bridge between reality and dreams was explaining it.


Kusum didn’t have to answer. Ecstatic, Nimali had flipped around and put her palms against the glass doors, eyes glistening and mouth open. Kusum smiled, seeing her girl crowned again. She basked in it for a moment until that familiar feeling of waiting for the world to catch up started to creep in from the corners. “Come on, let’s lock this lease in,” Kusum said walking inside with Nimali scrambling to keep up behind.
